The Fury Sports Report

Each week the athletic department will update the “Fury Faithful” with recaps of completed varsity matches/games. Please follow the action on www.fcds.org/athletics and on Twitter at @FCDSAthletics.

Boys’ Soccer: FCDS Furies soccer team lost last Tuesday’s non-conference game against the sixth-ranked Forbush Falcon soccer team. FCDS held the visiting Falcons to a 0-0 first-half score. The visitors took control of the game in the second half, scoring 3 goals to win the game. Outstanding defense led by Zachary Moore, Colten Eller, Ben Burnett, and Harry Thomas kept the home team chances alive until the very end.

Volleyball:  On September 13, the varsity volleyball team took on Forsyth Home Educators. After losing the first game 25-23, the Furies rallied and came back strong winning the next three games 30-28,
25-19, and 25-20. The girls played their hearts out during this match and the teamwork on the court was unstoppable! Hannah Spencer had an amazing match of diving for balls, ending up with 1 dig and 4 aces. Hannah Reid had an unbelievable 10 kills, 3 aces, 3 digs, and 1 block. Gracie Fowler also had a great match with 2 aces, 3 digs, and 2 kills.

Girls’ Golf:  The Furies are starting to hit their stride. Our top three players are as good as anyone's, but now our second-tier players are starting to become a force. Zoe Kurtz has started to really make a difference. As she gains tournament experience, her scores should continue to come down. Yasmin Horner, McCray White, and Sophie Scherer continue to work hard. These three represent the future of girls’ golf at FCDS, and the future is bright. Julianne Strauch had a fantastic week. She shot 37 on Tuesday at Sapona Ridge, and fired a school record 33 at Old Town Club in our match on Thursday. On Thursday, the girls beat a very strong team from Reagan High school. This week we have matches against Cannon School and Charlotte Country Day.

Girls’ Tennis:  The Furies travelled to High Point on Friday, September 16 and brought home an 8-1 victory. We played doubles first and the teams of Taylor Myers/Noel Ellis, Ashley Walker/Brynna Myers and Maddie Smith/Hallie Kincaid swept their events. Maddie Smith stepped up to the #1 singles position and lost to a very strong WCDS player. The following Furies swept the remaining singles events: #2 Hallie Kincaid; #3 Kate Rollins; #4 Ash Huggins; #5 Brynn Freeman; and #6 Adrianna Torrieri. Mindy Li also won an exhibition match. Thanks to the parents who came over to support the team.

Cross Country: We had a good weekend in Wilmington. The teams competed mostly against big public schools. We saw solid races by all the teams and some very impressive individual performances. Lindsey Ickes was the first-place finisher in the Girls’ Championship Race with a time of 20:06. Ben Mitchell finished second in the Boys’ Championship Race with a time of 17:01. Special thanks to Ken and Janie Budd for hosting the teams for beach time and dinner on Saturday afternoon. Also, thanks to all the parents who contributed food and drinks to the weekend!

The boys just missed a perfect score of 15, totaling 17 points, in soundly defeating Bishop McGuinness and Greensboro Day. Ben Mitchell ran a home course personal best time of 17:03 to lead the Furies. He was followed by Will Scott (2nd), Blake Budd (3rd), Jackson Halus (5th), Daniel Snyder (6th), Kyle Budd (8th) and Lucas Plitt (12th).

The girls also dominated, defeating 2nd place finisher Greensboro Day by 18 points, and finishing way ahead of Bishop, Salem Academy, and High Point Christian. Lindsey Ickes won the race with a stellar time of 20:43, also a personal best home course time. Lauren Turner (5th), Haleigh Kozlowski (6th), Christy Lauffenburger (7th), Gabby Kozlowski (8th),and Sophie Halus (10th) all ran to top-10 finishes. Thanks to all the parents who served as course marshals and to those who provided drinks and cold towels. It was a great day of racing on campus!

Saturday, September 24 is the Fury 5K at 4:45 p.m. After some consideration, we have decided to let some team members compete. We still need a few folks to help out on the course, but most will be eligible to run. Parents and siblings are also encouraged to run!

Field Hockey: Fury field hockey played against The Asheville School in a close game last Friday. Eva Hollar had a stellar performance for her first time in goal with 6 saves. Senior Julia Cullinan dominated the midfield and transitioned to offense to take 9 shots on goal. One of her shots was tipped in by Regan Didier. Unfortunately, the game was lost 1-2, but it was a fight until the end.
